54 Hole Tournament 3rd - 5th May 2011

The wonderful Dunes Golf Links - host of the 2nd Round

Mornington Peninsula Golf Tourism wishes to thank Schweppes, RACV Resort Cape Schanck, Tourism Victoria and the Mornington Peninsula Shire for their support of our second annual 54 hole Tournament.

Our second annual 3 day tournament has been branded by all participants as a great success, with the three host courses, Rosebud Park, The Dunes and Sorrento Golf Club, providing an unforgettable experience for all participants. 88 golf enthusiasts who travelled FROM as far a field as Cairns, Tasmania & New Zealand all came together to find three great golf courses in fabulous condition, some keen competition and the camaraderie that developed as the week progressed. Friendships from last year were reacquainted and new ones made as all entrants were of a like mind to compete, but to enjoy the full benefits of participating in an event such as this. Indications are that almost all intend to return next year, bring additional friends and help Mornington Peninsula Golf Tourism to grow this Tournament into one of the main Events for amateur golfers on the yearly calendar.

The Tournament kicked off at Rosebud Park with a 12.15pm Shotgun start (preceded by a marvellous bbq in the picnic grounds) Many participants donned their Tournament caps as they strode or 'carted' to their commemcement hole eager to see what the day would bring. To a person, all were so taken by the stunning views that it was difficult to concentrate on one shot at a time. The other issue common to all players was how to read the greens as reports of putts rolling uphill were heard from various greens around the course. Some did manage though and after day 1 there were some good scores:
Ladies: Judy Stephen; 37 pts, Men's A Grade: Geoff Bills 38 pts, B Grade: Karl Mabey 40 pts, C Grade: Ian Phillips 40 pts.
The 19th hole at Rosebud Park is across the road at Carrington Park Club and again the views from the elevated clubrooms took the breath away. All entrants enjoyed a welcome party and were welcomed to the Morningtom Peninsula by Cr Tim Rodgers. The presentation of the daily event winners highlighted the competitive spread of the scores and set the mood for all to improve on Day 2.

The following day at the wonderful Dunes Golf Course kicked off with a light luncheon, however many participants chose to spend their time on the marvelous practice facilities, chipping and putting in an attempt to get in tune with 'links golf'. Whilst the weather threatened, the rain held off until the end of the round but this was mainly due to the south easterly that developed during the day and presented all players with a true challenge of windy conditions on one of the best links courses in the country. Again, many excelled in taking on these conditions with some good scores retuned for a second day:
Ladies: Victoria Scott; 37 pts, Men's A Grade: Richard Bulmer 36 pts, B Grade: Alan Siggs 41 pts, C Grade: Tony Sadler 38 pts.

An early start at Sorrento had many breathing into cupped hands as the air was 'fresh' but it was a beauiful morning for golf, at one of the most visually impressive and well conditioned courses one could find. Whilst not particularly long, Sorrento just oozes class as a true sandbelt layout and some learned that they may have been better to leave the new big driver in the bag on some of the holes that require positioning more tham length from the tee. Those who knew they were in contention for the 54 hole Championship experienced what it's like playing in an event with a chance to win on the last day and in the end only one shot separated the winner and second placed gent.
Daily winners were:
Ladies: Kathleen Carter; 37 pts, Men's A Grade: Chris Mair 38 pts, B Grade: Peter Bissett 40 pts, C Grade: Bernie Agnew 42 pts.

Congratulations to 54 Hole Champions
